Bio:

Carolyn reports on science for outlets including The New York Times, National Geographic, Scientific American, Knowable Magazine, Eos, and Chemical & Engineering News. She’s also a contributing editor at Science News Explores, where she edits news and features and writes a monthly column called Analyze This that teaches kids how read graphs and work with data. As a host on Science for the People, Carolyn interviews scientists and book authors.

These days, her reporting mostly centers on animal oddities, earth science and archaeology. A former writer for kids at Science News Explores (formerly Science News for Students), Carolyn can tackle complicated topics and makes them fun to read. She delights in the wild and weird (dreaming spiders or vaginal teeth, anyone?).

Before she became a journalist, Carolyn spent many years wielding a pipette, working with acids and culturing microbes. She earned a Ph.D. in environmental engineering from Northwestern University, where she studied how light can change the harmful effects of nanoparticles, tiny pieces of matter, to microbes like E. coli. Carolyn started reporting on research as a AAAS Mass Media Fellow at The Sacramento Bee and didn’t look back, finishing her degree and then jumping into science journalism through internships at Science News and The Scientist.

Carolyn has been a full-time freelancer for several years. When not delving into a new scientific discovery, you might find Carolyn behind her sewing machine or trying to amuse her cat.

Carolyn is a member of the National Association of Science Writers, a former board member of the DC Science Writers Association, and the former NASW liaison and webmaster for Chicago Science Writers.
